You may recognize the lovely Hannah Beth from a few months back (see “A Walk in the Woods). When she and model Tara Sova mentioned that they wanted to shoot together, I knew just the photographer for the job – namely, me. The three of us were up bright and early to catch the morning sun in the woods, then headed downtown to mix a little grit and glamour.

A nurse by day, Emily was ready to jump back into modeling and acting and needed some fresh headshots to get started. So the two of us scoured the streets of downtown Wilmington, North Carolina for exquisite light and color, managed to avoid being run over by the horse-drawn tour bus and somewhere along the way captured some amazing shots.

Signs of Life

When Wilmington artist Lesley Fields decided her online store needed a serious makeover, 1201 saw it as the perfect opportunity to try our hand at product photography. Lesley’s designs needed to show their true colors (umm… literally), and with a variety of designs each requiring an appropriate backdrop, this project took us on quite the adventure, from trudging around in my back yard to a friend’s living room (we commandeered her dog as well) to climbing a lifeguard tower at Wrightsville Beach. Check out Lesley’s revamped site at http://www.yourethatgirldesigns.etsy.com.

Creme de la 365

As expected, the 365 project has turned my life and my photography on end in the best way possible. Adventurous, challenging and most certainly taxing, my daily self portraits now make up the bulk of my current portfolio. With 287 days still to go, I thought I’d post some of the highlights from the journey-thus-far. These include my favorites and those with a high “interestingness” factor according to Flickr (whatever that means…).

Rebel Yell

Finally had the perfect opportunity to have a go at shooting a live band. Flannel Rebellion is a 90’s grunge/rock cover based in Wilmington and made up of five musicians from various local original bands. This powerhouse nails all the songs of my teenage years and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture some of their energy and personality.

A Walk in the Woods

Recently I had the great fortune to work with the young and lovely Hannah Hackley out at Greenfield Lake. One of my favorite locations in the Wilmington area, this swampy park has no shortage of fascinating backdrops. Hannah and I (along with her 8-week-old German Shepard pup) ventured into just a few of Greenfield’s nooks and crannies for this casual wilderness portrait shoot.

When my friend Maria adopted Duncan, a 9-year-old Peekapoo, she wanted some shots of Duncan to introduce him to her friends and to send back to his original family. One chilly afternoon, we spent some time hanging out in Maria’s living room and it turns out Duncan’s a total poser (and I mean that in the nicest of ways). Throw a 9-year-old Jack Russell alpha female into the mix (Millie) and we had ourselves a party (and Duncan only actually fell asleep once at said party – he’s a senior citizen, give the little guy a break).

Whooo Are Youuu?

While I’m an avid reader and many a book has inspired my creativity, none has been so influential as Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Today, while most of America was entranced by the Super Bowl, I spent some time on an Alice-inspired photo shoot. The backdrop is handwritten (the text is the infamous Catepillar scene) and as I wanted one of the final images to serve as my Day 25 self-portrait (See “365″ below), I had no assistance with the shoot. And somehow this was all a lot of fun…

When a photographer friend of mine invited me to join him on his next shoot, I was gung ho – completely excited to get some work under my belt shooting someone besides, well… me. But when I found out our shoot would be of the swimsuit variety, I was slightly intimidated. This is not something I’ve ever attempted, but what the hell? Nothing like a whole lot of skin to get you out of your comfort zone and challenge you to capture great images of something completely beyond typical realm. Thanks so much to Larry Soblotne Jr. and to our model, Asachia. If February looks warm and summery in these shots it’s a complete credit to Asachia’s high spirits and thick skin – temperatures were actually around 55 degrees.
